Default Cursor Button

Clicking the Default Cursor button de-selects any active tools and returns the cursor to its normal state. It does not, however, de-select any selected areas surrounded by marquees. (See Control Square, De-Select All Button.)

Right-clicking in the Top View or Camera View while a given tool is active and selecting Cancel Tool will also activate the Default Cursor.

Clicking at any point on the ground in the Camera View while the Default Cursor is on brings up a red-and-white striped surveyor's pole.

It also shows up as cross-hairs in the Top View. This surveyor's pole represents a constant height no matter where on the Camera View it is; when it's close to the camera it looks bigger, and when it's far away it looks smaller. This gives you a sense of scale when you're looking over the landscape.
